Why is loyalty so important?

It determines your options when re-signing your players once they hit 27 years and older.

Hi, would anyone be able to explain how the loyalty bonus is derived? It's vastly different (cost wise) across player. I'm guessing it is a factor of age, player quality and current loyalty but I cannot figure out the calculation.
